DEDUCTIBILITY OF GIFTS TO CRIME STOPPERS AUSTRALIA LIMITED

Gifts to Crime Stoppers Australia Limited to the value of $2 or more will be deductible for income tax purposes, the Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer, Senator Helen Coonan, announced today.

Individual State and Territory based `Crime Stoppers' organisations are members of Crime Stoppers Australia Limited.

Senator Coonan said the organisation encouraged community involvement in the apprehension and conviction of criminals, and the reduction in crime by the provision of information to the proper authorities.

"Crime Stoppers is an important and widely recognised organisation within the community, and its role in helping solve and reduce crimes is invaluable," Senator Coonan said.

"Crime Stoppers works effectively as a partnership between the police, the media and the community. It is recognised as a world leader, amongst crime stoppers programs internationally, in the management and outcomes of its programs.

"Deductible gift recipient status will help Crime Stoppers Australia Limited attract public support for their activities which help make our communities more secure," Senator Coonan said.

Legislation to give effect to this announcement will be introduced as soon as practicable. Taxpayers should ensure they receive a receipt for their donation.
