Government nominates three Commissioners for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

Experienced competition and consumer officials Dr Michael Schaper, Ms Sarah Court and Ms Cristina Cifuentes have been nominated as Commissioners of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), said Assistant Treasurer, David Bradbury.

"I have written to the State Premiers and Territory Chief Ministers nominating both Dr Schaper and Ms Court for reappointment, and Ms Cifuentes for appointment to the ACCC," said Mr Bradbury.

"Dr Schaper and Ms Court have both made outstanding contributions to the ACCC since their initial appointments in 2008."

Dr Schaper's nomination will ensure that the ACCC continues to have a Deputy Chair with small business expertise. Dr Schaper worked previously as ACT Small Business Commissioner, Dean of Murdoch University Business School, and Head of the School of Business at Bond University.

Ms Court is a former senior executive lawyer and Director with the Australian Government Solicitor.  She has extensive experience in restrictive trade practices law, consumer protection law, and law enforcement litigation.

"The Government is also delighted to nominate Ms Cifuentes as a full-time Commissioner," said Mr Bradbury.

Ms Cifuentes is currently on the Board of the Australian Energy Regulator. Her membership of the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal between 1997 and 2006 gives her a breadth of experience in energy networks and market regulation.

If the majority of States and Territories support the nominations, it is the Government's intention to recommend to the Governor-General that Dr Schaper, Ms Court and Ms Cifuentes each be appointed for a five year period.
