Helping Flood-Affected Queensland Communities Rebuild

Joint media release with
Senator the Hon Joe Ludwig
Minister Assisting on Queensland Floods Recovery

The Gillard Government will provide the vital assistance that Queensland needs to rebuild without a flood levy.

Australians were very generous in helping Queenslanders rebuild following the 2011 floods and Cyclone Yasi by contributing through the flood levy.

Although this is a significant and severe disaster, it was not on the same scale as the disasters of 2011, so the Federal Government will account for this expenditure in the usual way.

All up, we're already investing around $9 billion for the purpose of rebuilding after Cyclone Yasi, and the 2011 floods and other disasters, and we will stand shoulder to shoulder again with the people of Queensland.

In particular, we will be there alongside the communities in Bundaberg and the Burnett region as they tackle the enormous challenges that have been thrown at them.

As the crisis unfolded, the Federal Government deployed the Australian Defence Forces and activated disaster assistance arrangements.

We have been working closely with the State Government and local councils, which is rightly what the community expects of their governments during natural disasters.
