Regional flights protected at Sydney Airport

Joint media release with
The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport
Minister for Regional Development and Local Government

The Federal Labor Government is guaranteeing access to Sydney Airport for regional airlines and the passengers they carry until 2016.

In response to a request from Minister Albanese, the Assistant Treasurer has updated rules which guarantee fair prices for regional airline access at Australia’s busiest airport.

This will mean that Sydney Airport cannot increase its charges for regional airlines above the Consumer Price Index.

Further, Sydney Airport will be required to notify the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) of any proposed increases for regional airlines.

In the last 12 months, over 67,000 regional airline flights flew into and out of Sydney Airport, carrying almost 2 million passengers.

Sydney Airport is an important hub for regional Australians, connecting them to other parts of Australia and the world.

It is also vital for regional Australians coming to Sydney to do business, visiting for medical appointments or for employment opportunities.

Sydney Airport is approaching capacity and regional airlines face real pressures to maintain their access in that environment.

Extending current arrangements until 2016 ensures commercial pressures do not push regional airlines out, in favour of larger commercial interstate and international airlines.

In addition, access to Sydney Airport during peak periods for regional air services will continue to be protected by the Slot Management Scheme.
