Reappointment of part-time member to the Financial Reporting Council

I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr Stein Helgeby as a part-time member of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) for three-year term.

The FRC is the peak body responsible for overseeing the effectiveness of, and advising the Government on, the financial reporting framework in Australia.

Its key functions include the oversight of the accounting and auditing standards setting processes for the public and private sectors, providing strategic advice in relation to the quality of audits conducted by Australian auditors, and advising the Minister on these and related matters to the extent they affect the financial reporting framework in Australia.

The FRC monitors the development of international accounting and auditing standards, works to promote the development of a single set of accounting and auditing standards for worldwide use and promotes the adoption of these standards.

The FRC's 19 members represent a wide range of stakeholders including preparers and users of financial statements, the Commonwealth as well as State and Territory governments, and other government bodies such as standard setters and regulators.

Dr Helgeby has extensive experience with public sector financial reporting issues.  He is currently the Deputy Secretary of the Governance and Resource Management Group at the Commonwealth Department of Finance and Deregulation in Canberra. He was previously Deputy Secretary of the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance from 2003 to 2010. He holds a Bachelor and a Masters of Arts, and a PhD from Australian National University.
