Small business to get the same protections as consumers

Small businesses will get the same protections as consumers when it comes to unfair contracts imposed by big business.

The Abbott Government will provide $1.4 million to extend unfair contract relief from consumers to small business. Currently, consumers are protected from unfair terms in standard form contracts.

Small businesses have told us they have also been subjected to unfair terms in standard form contracts , which are presented by big business on a 'take it or leave it' basis, with little or no ability to vary the terms.

The legislative reforms will make unfair terms in standard form contracts with small businesses void. This will help to provide a level playing field for small businesses and enhance the welfare of Australians by increasing small business certainty, confidence and productivity.

It is part of the Abbott Government's economic strategy to build a strong, prosperous economy and a safe and secure Australia.

Once the laws come into force, any remaining money will be used to provide education and compliance activities to small business.

Labor in 2007 promised to give small business the benefit of unfair contract provisions but dropped the promise after the election without explanation.

By making the right choices today, we are creating a stronger country for tomorrow, with more well-paid jobs and stronger small business so that all Australians can get ahead.
