Conroy Blunders on E-Commerce

Labor Senator Stephen Conroy should do his homework before asking silly questions about the new economy.

For the second time in three days Senator Conroy asked the same incorrect question about the Government's new Best Practice Model on E-commerce.

Despite what Senator Conroy might think, the Model's opt-in section on spamming relates to commercial e-mail not on-selling of e-mail addresses.

He got this wrong last Friday.

This shows that Labor's e-commerce spokesman cannot understand the Government's guidelines.

Today's mistake follows Senator Conroy's breathtaking candour last week when he told an Estimates hearing he is a dinosaur who has turned his back on new technology.

"I ask this out of the dinosaur [in me] … the only website that I visit is actually the Chelsea Soccer Club".

Senator Conroy also made it clear that Centre Unity was not the only dinosaur faction of which he is a member.

"… I am more in the dinosaur faction than any other reason, but, I mean, I won't bank on the net or go through e-commerce and put my details on the net."

"Kim Beazley must be alarmed his 'knowledge nation' has such a Luddite front-bencher in its ranks," Minister Hockey said.

"And the financial services sector should also be puzzled that there is a shadow minister who admits he won't get to grips with e-commerce.

"Senator Conroy is a great Victorian, and I am not talking about where he lives."
