NT boasts lowest jobless rate as Darwin booms on gas

The Northern Territory’s jobless rate fell to 3.3 per cent (trend) in May, the lowest in the country, as the economy benefited from significant Liquefied Natural Gas investment.

The Territory’s unemployment rate, which fell from 3.5 per cent the month earlier, is a good example of the type of job creation we have seen across the country in 2014.

Just in the first five months of this year, over 100,000 full-time jobs have been added to the economy.

Australia’s unemployment rate remained steady at 5.8 per cent in May 2014.

I saw first hand in Darwin today the flow-on benefits of the Ichthys LNG plant, with a boom in construction and investment in the local economy.

The Government’s Economic Action Strategy will fix the Budget and grow the economy. That means more jobs and better living standards for Australians.

We are cleaning up the mess Labor left that would have seen debt rising to $667 billion over the next decade.
