Deductibility of Gifts to the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial Appeal

The Assistant Treasurer, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced that gifts to the value of $2 dollars or more made to the Australian Ex-Prisoners Of War Memorial Appeal will be tax deductible.

Funds raised for the Appeal will be used to erect a national memorial in the City of Ballarat, dedicated to all Australian Ex-Prisoners Of War.

The objective of the memorial project is to promote community recognition of the service and extraordinary sacrifice made by Australian Ex-Prisoners Of War. This memorial will be unique because it will be the only national memorial for ex-POW’s and will include the name of every Australian ex-POW since the Boer War.

Tax deductible gift status will assist in attracting public support for the project and after the War Memorial Appeal has satisfied the usual public fund requirements, a date will be nominated from which gifts will be tax deductible.

Consistent with the Government’s general policy regarding war memorials, gift deductibility status will be for a single period of two years and legislation to give effect to the Government’s decision will be introduced as soon as practicable.
