This week, I will hold a series of town hall meetings across Australia to meet with charity sector representatives.
The Australian Government values the expertise and the contributions of the charity and non-profit sector, which constitutes almost one-tenth of the economy, and over one-tenth of employment. We know how vital Australian charities are in building stronger, fairer communities.
Australia’s charities are under pressure. Over the past generation, rates of joining, participating and volunteering have fallen. Under the former government, attacks on charities wasted the energy of the sector in pushing back against the anti-charity policies of the Coalition.
This week’s town hall meetings follow a series of successful meetings with charities last year, with town halls held in every Australian capital city and online.
These town hall meetings will build on the work that our government is already doing with the charity sector. As part of our goal to double philanthropy by 2030, we have initiated a Productivity Commission review of philanthropy. We have also started work on a Blueprint for strengthening the capacity and capability of Australian charities. We are working with states and territories to harmonise charitable fundraising laws.
