Geoff Allen Reappointed Chair of The Australian Statistics Advisory Council

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, the Hon Bernie Ripoll MP, today announced the reappointment of Mr Geoff Allen as Chair of the Australian Statistics Advisory Council (ASAC).

The role of ASAC is to provide guidance to the Minister and the Australian Statistician on the directions of, and priorities for, official statistics. This includes the improvement, extension and coordination of statistical services provided for public purposes in Australia.

Since 2007, in his first term as Chair of ASAC, Mr Allen has shown active leadership and influence in continuing efforts to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of Australia's official statistics, and in reinvigorating the role of ASAC to ensure a strong national statistical service to support informed decision-making.

Mr Ripoll welcomed the reappointment of Mr Allen.

"On behalf of the Government, I am very pleased to reappoint Mr Allen for a second term as Chair of the Australian Statistics Advisory Council. Mr Allen has demonstrated his commitment to improving the quality and availability of the statistical assets which support decision-making in Australia."

The Australian Statistician, Mr Brian Pink, also welcomed the appointment noting Mr Allen's strong leadership of the Council over the past five years.

Mr Allen's strong credentials led to his original appointment. He is the Director of the Allen Consulting Group, Chair of the Centre for Corporate Public Affairs, Chair of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia and the Asia-Pacific Regional Editor of the international journal, Public Affairs.

Mr Allen's reappointment is for a five-year term.
