Appointment of a New Part-Time Member to the Financial Reporting Council (FRC)

The Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law, Chris Bowen MP, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Stein Helgeby as a part-time member of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC).

Dr Stein Helgeby, from the Department of Finance and Deregulation, was appointed today, for a period of three years.

"The Government believes that the FRC fulfils an important role in the Australian business community. This appointment ensures that the FRC continues to have members that provide insights from a wide range of stakeholder bodies," Minister Bowen said.

"I would like to express my appreciation for the contributions Ms Kathryn Campbell has made to the FRC in the past, and also welcome Dr Stein Helgeby, who will be a valuable addition to the FRC."

The FRC is the oversight body for the accounting and audit standard setting arrangements in Australia and is responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of the auditor independence requirements in Australia.

Background

Dr Stein Helgeby was nominated by the Department of Finance and Deregulation to replace Ms Kathryn Campbell on the FRC. Dr Helgeby has recently commenced as the General Manager of the Financial Management Group at the Department of Finance and Deregulation. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours, a Masters of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University. Dr Helgeby was previously the Deputy Secretary of the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance from 2003 and has extensive experience with public sector financial reporting issues.

The FRC consists of a Chairman and 18 members, all of whom are appointed on a part-time basis.
