Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law, The Hon Chris Bowen MP, today announced the appointment of a new Deputy Chairperson and a new Commissioner to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
"I am very pleased to announce that Ms Belinda Gibson has been appointed as the new Deputy Chairperson of ASIC and Mr Shane Tregillis has been appointed as a new ASIC Commissioner," Mr Bowen said.
"These appointments are the result of an exhaustive application and interview process, which involved a number of first-class candidates.
"As the corporate regulator, ASIC has played a key role in ensuring the stability of Australia's financial system and markets through the Global Financial Crisis and beyond.
"The promotion of Ms Gibson to Deputy Chair and the appointment of Mr Tregillis will ensure that the Commission has the capacity and experience to deal with its increasing responsibilities, including market supervision and consumer credit."
The appointment of a new Commissioner will allow ASIC to increase its focus on retail investor issues and financial literacy.
