2007 National Consumer Congress Begins This Week

Government, business, academic and consumer representatives and community groups will gather in Melbourne on 14-15 March for the 2007 National Consumer Congress.

Organised by the Australian Government, the Congress is a major event on the consumer policy calendar and will seek to provide informed national and international perspectives on aspects of consumer policy.

“Consumer policy issues are a vital part of my portfolio. This year’s Congress will provide an opportunity for the Government to obtain firsthand the views of attendees on key consumer issues and perspectives on the way forward in the area of consumer policy,” said Chris Pearce.

The 2007 Congress will focus on the changing environment of consumer policy, exploring three key themes from both a national and international perspective: new consumer challenges and trends; frameworks for responding to change; and future directions in consumer policy.

Highlights of the Congress include addresses by Mr Paul Clitheroe, Mr Michael Jenkin, Chair of the OECD Committee on Consumer Policy, Mr Bernard Salt, demographer and partner of KPMG and Dr Ken Henry, Secretary of the Treasury. In addition, an in-depth panel discussion of the Productivity Commission inquiry into Australia’s consumer policy framework will be held, reflecting on its implications for consumers and business.

More information on the Congress, including a programme, is available at www.treasury.gov.au/ncc.
