ABS tourism survey to help industry - Pearce

Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer Chris Pearce said today that the decision by the Australian Statistician to conduct a survey on tourism marketing expenditure by business will be of great assistance to the Australian tourism industry.

In announcing the survey, to be conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Mr. Pearce said it has been designed in consultation with Tourism Australia and “will be largely used by that body to assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Tourism White paper to encourage the promotion of tourism, but will also be most valuable to the tourism sector generally”.

“Beginning this month, the survey will collect information for the year ended June 2004, from approximately 500 private businesses within selected tourism industries. The data will be broken down into expenditure targeted at international (inbound) and domestic travellers, with the former further broken down by country/region”.

“Tourism has been a major boon to the Australian economy over recent years. This survey will greatly assist Tourism Australia and the tourism industry facilitate promotion of what Australia has to offer, and the plans of those who wish to experience the many delights of our magnificent nation”, Mr. Pearce said.

Results from the survey are expected to be published in June of this year.
