New Chair Appointed for the Australian Statistical Advisory Council

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, Chris Pearce has welcomed the appointment by Cabinet of Mr Geoff Allen to the position of Chair of the Australian Statistical Advisory Council (ASAC).

Mr Allen replaces Professor Sandra Harding who has stepped down from the position after five years as Chair.

Mr Allen founded The Allen Consulting Group in 1988 and is currently a Director of the Group. He also founded the Centre for Corporate Public Affairs and is its Chairman.

Mr Allen holds office on a number of Boards and Committees and is Chairman of the Australian Government's Trade Policy Advisory Council. He is Deputy Chairman of the Melbourne Business School and is a Director of several private companies in the services sector.

Mr Allen is also involved in a number of major projects and activities, including reporting to the Australian Government on funding issues for national biotechnology research, and a review of the Government's Strategic Investment Coordinator process.

Mr Allen was previously a member of ASAC in the early 1980s.

Mr Pearce thanked Professor Harding for her strong contribution to ASAC over the past five years.

“Professor Harding has done a remarkable job as Chair of ASAC since 2001, the Council has been very active and provided good advice”, said Mr Pearce.

ASAC advises the Government and the Australian Statistician on statistical issues, and on medium and longer term priorities and work programs of the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
