Royal Australian Mint building refurbishment project

The operational efficiency of the Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) will be enhanced through refurbishment of the Mint building located in the Australian Capital Territory.

The refurbishment will be jointly managed by the Mint and the Department of Finance and Administration. The project is expected to commence in July 2006 and take three years to complete, at a cost of approximately $40 million. It will provide employment for approximately 100 staff on-site, as well as an additional 250 staff involved in off-site work over the life of the project.

The Mint building was purpose-built in 1965 to produce Australia’s decimal coinage and has not had any substantial upgrade works since its original construction. The refurbishment will ensure the continued economic viability of this landmark building and extend its useful life by some 25years. The modern fit-out will also improve the Mint’s ability to respond to changing operational needs.

The Mint is an operating division of the Treasury, and is responsible for producing circulating coins in Australia. The Mint is also responsible for promoting public understanding about the cultural and historical significance of coins and commerce. The Mint building in the ACT attracts over 200,000 visitors each year and offers guided tours, exhibitions and displays of coins, including the National Coin Collection. Large visitor numbers to the Mint emphasise the status of the Mint building as a national institution and valued tourism site.
