Housing Australia Future Fund completes largest project yet

The Albanese Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) is delivering its largest project yet – Swift Walk in Kensington, Victoria — a major project providing 362 new homes, including 272 social and affordable homes.

This project is helping tenants like Thangjam, Kristine, and their new baby who prior to moving in, had been in a share house and on the social housing waitlist for a decade.

Swift Walk is a clear example HAFF at work, delivering large-scale, mixed-tenure developments that boost overall supply, provide secure homes for people on lower and moderate incomes, and attract long-term investment into the housing system.

Backed by financing from the HAFF, this project brings together Assemble, Housing Choices Australia and HESTA — demonstrating how the HAFF is crowding in institutional capital alongside community housing expertise to deliver more homes faster.

Swift Walk joins a rapidly expanding pipeline of HAFF-supported developments now under construction or opening around the country, which is taking the Albanese Government closer to its ambitious target of delivering 55,000 social and affordable homes.

Together, these HAFF projects are adding new supply to the market, easing pressure on rents, and delivering more well-located homes close to jobs, hospitals, childcare and transport.

Contrast that with the former Coalition Government which was so checked out of housing that it barely had a Housing Minister for most of its time in office and only built 373 homes in nearly a decade.

If fact, in just this one project, Labor is supporting 70% of all the social and affordable homes built by the Coalition in nearly a decade.

The HAFF’s ramping up and projects like these are just the start.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing, Homelessness & Cities, Clare O’Neil MP

“Our government is building homes - for key workers, for families, for Australians who need extra help and support. In this one project, we’re delivering almost as many homes as the Coalition built in 9 years.”

Quotes attributable to new HAFF tenant, Thangjam

“After being on the waitlist for housing for a long time, moving into Swift Walk feels like an enormous weight has finally lifted. For my wife, our newborn and me, having a secure, well-managed home through Housing Choices Australia and supported by the Housing Australia Future Fund means more than we can say. The quality of the apartments and the resident facilities are fantastic, and it truly feels like a dream come true for our young family.”
