The Australian Government's consumer finance website, MoneySmart, has attracted more than 1 million users since its launch in March and picked up a web industry award, said Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, David Bradbury.
MoneySmart, developed by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), was named the best government website at the recent 2011 Australian Web Awards.
"I'd like to congratulate ASIC and the MoneySmart team for their work on the website," said Mr Bradbury.
"MoneySmart has now attracted more than 1 million users since its launch in March and has become the first choice of many Australians looking for online guidance and resources to help them get in control of their finances.
"MoneySmart can offer guidance on a range of questions people may have about personal finances, like signing up to a first mobile phone contract, making a savings plan or working out the real cost of borrowing money and using credit cards.
"There are 26 free online calculators and tools, including specially-designed mobile phone apps that can be downloaded to your Apple or Android smart phone.
"It doesn't matter how young or old you are, it is never too late to take a financial health check. Understanding more about your financial health can help you set goals, detect problems early and help you build your savings."
MoneySmart is part of the National Financial Literacy Strategy, which aims to improve the understanding of personal finances among Australians. The Gillard Government has also provided $10 million over three years for the Helping Our Kids Understand Finance program, in which ASIC will deliver face-to-face financial literacy training for more than 6,000 teachers as part of the new Australian Curriculum.
