Families don't deserve misleading funeral claims

Funeral services trying to take advantage of grieving families by jacking up their prices and falsely blaming the carbon price will have to contend with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

There are reports today of funeral services suddenly jacking up the prices of their burials after 1 July and blaming the carbon tax.

It would be reprehensible to take advantage of grieving relatives by making misleading claims about funeral expenses.

No cemeteries or crematoriums are liable under the carbon price mechanism.

The Managing Director of Tobin Brothers, one of Australia's largest funeral services, James MacLeod, has said that the carbon price should have little or no impact on the cost of funerals:

"From where I sit, I have seen no evidence to date on why funerals will increase."

Businesses should be careful about making misleading claims about the impact of the carbon price because the ACCC has powers to investigate and take legal action over false claims.

If anyone suspects a business of jacking up their prices and falsely blaming the carbon price, then they should contact the ACCC on 1300 303 609.

It is a pity that the Opposition, instead of standing up for consumers, is encouraging rip-offs by making its own false claims about the impact of the carbon price on funerals.
