The Government welcomes $23 million in penalties awarded in the Federal Court against two airlines for cartel conduct, said Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury.
The ACCC has successfully pursued a number of international airlines for price fixing and today's penalties now bring the total amount of penalties to $91 million against a total of 12 airlines - the highest total penalties resulting from a single ACCC investigation.
"These are serious penalties for serious anti-competitive conduct," said Mr Bradbury.
"The Government has continued to strengthen Australia's laws against cartel conduct and there are substantial civil and potentially criminal penalties for those found to be in breach of the laws.
"Price fixing, or cartel conduct, hurts consumers for the financial gain of the companies involved.
"Companies seeking to engage in conduct that breaches our competition laws should look at these penalties as a warning of the serious consequences that could follow."
