Minister for Social Inclusion

Australia's first independent charities regulator, the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) commenced operation today, following royal assent of the ACNC legislation.

"After almost two decades of reviews, reports and inquiries, and more than 18 months of extensive consultation and stakeholder engagement, the time has come for Australia's first independent charities commission to open its doors," said Assistant Treasurer, David Bradbury MP.

"The NFP sector has made it clear that it wants an independent regulator, with a greater focus on the needs of the sector. With the ACNC opening today, the Gillard Government has delivered a positive and future focused reform, which will strengthen and support the NFP sector as it grows into the future."

The Minister for Social Inclusion Mark Butler said that the start of the ACNC marks an important milestone for Australia's NFP sector and is a cornerstone element of the Gillard Government's NFP reform agenda, which aims to support a vibrant, independent and innovative NFP sector.

"The new national regulator will drive reform to cut red tape and is a key part of delivering a national approach to NFP regulation."

The formal launch of the ACNC will be held next Monday 10 December in Melbourne.

Further information on the ACNC can be found on ACNC website or by phoning 13 ACNC (13 2262).
