Reappointment of a full-time member and the full-time Chair of the Australian Energy Regulator

The Government has today announced the reappointment of Mr Andrew Reeves as a State and Territory member and the Chair of the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) for a further 12-month period beginning on 19 July 2013. 

The AER has responsibility for the economic regulation of the National Electricity Market, as well as wholesale gas markets and pipelines in jurisdictions other than Western Australia. The AER also enforces the National Energy Retail Law in South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory.

Mr Reeves has been a member of the AER since 2008 and Chair since 2010. Prior to his appointment to the AER, he was the Tasmanian Energy Regulator and the Commissioner of the Tasmanian Government Prices Oversight Commission. He has formal qualifications in engineering and postgraduate qualifications in professional management and resource economics. His qualifications and experience fulfil the requirements in the Competition and Consumer Act 2010.

The AER consists of two members nominated by the States and Territories and one member nominated by the Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in accordance with the Australian Energy Market Agreement. One member serves as Chair. Mr Reeves was nominated for reappointment by participating state and territory members of the Standing Council on Energy and Resources.
