An Issues Paper seeking information on consumers' experiences when making 'app' and 'in-app' purchases on mobile and handheld devices was released today, said Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury.
The Commonwealth Consumer Affairs Advisory Council (CCAAC) is undertaking an inquiry into consumer experiences with apps under the Terms of Reference released in November 2012.
"The Government is keen to learn more about consumers' experiences with apps, including making 'in-app' purchases on mobile and handheld devices," said Mr Bradbury.
"I understand that there are concerns about how some applications such as games are marketed, and that the marketing of these games could mislead consumers, including children, into making further purchases without knowing they will incur real costs.
"This inquiry will provide an opportunity for the community to share their views and experiences and raise any issues they have encountered through the purchase and use of these applications."
The Issues Paper for the inquiry is located on the Commonwealth Consumer Affairs Advisory Council website. The inquiry will be open for consultation until 31 January 2013.
