Deadline Extended for Public Submissions on Public Liability Insurance

Members of the public, sporting groups, cultural and community organisations and small businesses are being encouraged to have their say about the affordability and accessibility of public liability insurance premiums, the Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer, Senator Helen Coonan, said today.

Senator Coonan said the public consultation process was an important part of the lead-up to the Ministerial Meeting of State, Territory and Commonwealth insurance Ministers on 27 March 2002 in Canberra.

"The public consultation project is a great chance to make suggestions that will be considered as part of the process to find solutions," Senator Coonan said.

"While Government at all levels are very aware of the extent of the problem, it important that we avoid playing the blame game and focus on finding workable solutions. Input particularly from grass roots organisations who have been affected will be very valuable in mapping the way ahead."

"I look forward to receiving this information in determining future directions and possible options for maintaining the affordability and accessibility of public liability insurance premiums."

All submissions will be circulated to Ministers prior to the meeting and a report of key recommendations and comments discussed during the Ministers Meeting.

Senator Coonan announced today that the deadline for receipt of submissions had been extended to close of business 20 March 2002 to give stakeholders additional time to comment.

Submissions should be forwarded to The Manager, General Insurance Unit, Department of the Treasury, Langton Crescent, Canberra, ACT, 2600.
