Mount Macedon Memorial Cross Trust receives gift deductibility

The Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer, Senator Helen Coonan, has announced that from today to 14 August 2004, gifts to the value of $2 or more to the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross Trust will be deductible for income tax purposes.

The Mount Macedon Memorial Cross Trust will restore, develop, protect and maintain the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women.

The Mount Macedon Memorial Cross is regarded by the RSL as the second most important war memorial in Victoria after the Shrine of Remembrance.

"The Trust will work to protect and maintain the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross which requires regular maintenance," Senator Coonan said. "The cross, which would be familiar to those in the surrounding area, is at a site which is exposed to adverse weather conditions."

"The Macedon Ranges are a popular tourist destination within close proximity to Melbourne and the Memorial Cross is receiving an increasing number of visitors.

Senator Coonan said she hoped tax deductible gift status would help the Trust attract public support for its activities.

"Legislation to give effect to this announcement will be introduced as soon as practicable," Senator Coonan said.

"Taxpayers should ensure that they receive a receipt for their donation."
