Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer, Senator Helen Coonan, will deliver a keynote address at the National Press Club on Friday 21 March.
Senator Coonan's speech titled `Redesigning the tax system: Taking Stock' will examine Australia's tax system - where we've come from, where we're heading to and how we get there.
Senator Coonan is the first Assistant Treasurer to speak at the National Press Club. She is also the inaugural Minister for Revenue.
Senator Coonan's portfolio responsibilities include:-
- taxation, including design of taxation laws, business tax reform administrative matters relating to the ATO and compliance;
- taxation policy and administration relating to superannuation; and
- prudential regulation and financial institutions, including the Government's response to the HIH Royal Commission, HIH claims support, the administration of Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and the safety of Superannuation Review.
The Minister has also played a key role in the Government's response to the complex set of issues surrounding the affordability, availability and safety of public liability, professional indemnity and medical indemnity insurance.
Senator Coonan said that over the last three years the Government has introduced the most comprehensive and successful tax reform in Australian history.
"The huge reforms that have been implemented over the past few years have provided long term structural benefits to the economy that ensure Australia can now boast a stable economic environment conducive to longer-term productive investment," Senator Coonan said.
"Now it's time to look at where we are heading and what role the community will play taking our tax system forward."
