New Chairman Appointed to the Australian Statistics Advisory Council

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, Senator Ian Campbell, today announced the appointment of Professor Sandra Harding as the new chairman of the Australian Statistics Advisory Council (ASAC).

ASAC advises the Australian Statistician and the Government on statistical priorities.

Senator Campbell said Professor Harding's skills and experience would ensure the council continued to provide important advice and improved official statistical services.

"The role of ASAC is very important and we are fortunate that Professor Harding is available to step in and lead it," he said.

Professor Harding is Dean of the Faculty of Business at the Queensland University of Technology and has held a number of high profile positions in academic circles and acted as a consultant to several state governments. She is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Institute of Management. Professor Harding is also a member of the HIH Assessment Review Panel.

Professor Harding's appointment is for a term of five years. Professor Harding succeeds Mr John Macleod who held the position from 1996.
