The Minister for Financial Services & Regulation, Joe Hockey, today said consumers could take action if they have bought Ansett airline tickets with a credit card but been unable to fly.
"My office and the banking ombudsman, Colin Neave, have had calls from consumers confused about what action they can take if they have bought Ansett airline tickets with their credit cards," the Minister said.
"I have spoken with the CEOs of the major banks and asked them to honour their obligations to Ansett airline customers.
"I have been assured that the banks will assist Ansett customers with unused airline tickets bought on credit cards."
Consumers using a credit card are entitled to a full refund if:
- the time of the prepaid flight has passed and Ansett failed to deliver the service; or
- the Ansett administrator admits the airline cannot legally deliver a flight and therefore, it won't be able to perform its end of the contract.
Under those circumstances consumers should be entitled to receive a chargeback to their credit cards for the purchase price of the ticket.
If any consumers have problems or queries they should contact the Banking Industry Ombudsman, on 1800 337 444.
