The Government has unveiled an upgraded product recall web site which gives consumers faster and more detailed information about recalled products, the Minister for Financial Services & Regulation, Joe Hockey, announced today.
"The site delivers enhanced consumer safety through up-to-date product recall information being instantly available on the Internet," the Minister said.
The site accesses current information from government agencies and companies in Australia. There are also Internet links to other government agencies which monitor recalls for food, motor vehicles, medicines and agricultural and veterinary chemicals.
"Consumers need reliable and timely information to make an informed choice. Information is a key part of the Government's philosophy of Consumer Sovereignty and consumer empowerment."
"Consumers will have easy access to information that allows them to identify the affected good, what the problem is, and the recommended action to take," said the Minister.
The Product Recalls Australia Web site replaces the existing Australian Product Safety Register Web site. The site will also allow consumers to see all recalls conducted over the last 30 days, as well as providing a search function for all other current recalls. A frequently asked questions page will provide further information on product recalls conducted in Australia.
The site also provides companies in Australia with information on how to conduct a safety related product recall. Further site enhancements will include an electronic product recall form that all companies can use to notify government of a safety-related recall.
