Average weekly household expenditure on petrol by income
In terms of spending over the income distribution, average weekly expenditure on petrol in absolute terms increases with household income, from $16.36 at the lowest income quintile to $53.87 at the highest income quintile.

Vehicle Ownership by socio-economic groupings
Based on census data, households in relatively disadvantaged areas are less likely to own motor vehicles than those in relatively advantaged areas. Where motor vehicles are owned, households in relatively disadvantaged areas are most likely to own only one car whereas households in relatively advantaged areas are more likely to have two or more motor vehicles.
Household motor vehicle ownership by index of relative socio-economic advantage and disadvantage
- The deciles in the chart are based on the ABS Index of relative socio-economic advantage and disadvantage. This index summarises information about the economic and social conditions of people and households within an area. In creating the deciles, all areas are ordered from lowest to highest score, the lowest 10% of areas are given a decile number of 1 and so on, up to the highest 10% of areas which are given a decile number of 10. Decile 1 is the most disadvantaged relative to the other deciles. Note that deciles have equal number of areas, not people.
- No cars category includes the categories ‘no cars’, ‘not stated’, and ‘not applicable’ in the census.
