The Australian Government will nominate Mr Barry Sterland PSM for appointment as the Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund commencing in late 2014. Mr Sterland will represent a constituency of countries at the IMF, comprising of Australia, Kiribati, Korea, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Uzbekistan, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Mr Sterland is a highly experienced Treasury official with expertise in international economic and financial matters. He is currently an Executive Director at Treasury and is G20 Finance Deputy, providing valuable leadership during our G20 Presidency.
He also has a wide range of experience across several senior positions in the Australian Public Service including: First Assistant Secretary, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet; First Assistant Secretary, Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency; and First Assistant Secretary, Department of the Environment and Heritage. Mr Sterland was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2010 for his work on climate change policy.
Mr Sterland has a Masters in Public Policy from Princeton University and a First Class Honours degree in Economics from the University of Sydney.
The Executive Director position of the constituency currently rotates between Australia and Korea. Therefore, when Mr Sterland’s term ends, the position will rotate to the Republic of Korea, and Australia will nominate an Alternate Executive Director for a two year term.
Executive Directors and Alternate Executive Directors are employees of the IMF and their salaries and other allowances are met by the Fund.
