New program to support people living with epilepsy

The Morrison Government will invest $20 million through the 2019-20 Budget in a new, innovative program to support people living with epilepsy.

It is estimated that approximately 250,000 Australians have been diagnosed with epilepsy.

Unfortunately, epilepsy is not well understood in the community. Epilepsy is not a single condition, rather a range of different conditions that can cause seizures.

Despite most people affected by epilepsy being able to manage their condition well with medication, there is often a stigma associated with it.

The flow on effects from this can be challenging for people with their mental health, education and workforce opportunities suffering.

The funding will allow the Epilepsy Foundation to implement the Epilepsy Smart Australia Program - designed to provide vital assistance to Australians affected by this chronic condition.

The Epilepsy Smart Australia Program will help break down these barriers. It will initially be delivered as a pilot program across all states and territories.

A series of education and self-management tools will be developed to support people affected by epilepsy. These resources will focus on addressing the stigma associated with epilepsy.

Medical professionals will also receive support and information to help them care for their patients.

The Foundation will also undertake valuable research into the social and economic impacts of epilepsy. This will provide important insight into the challenges - and potential solutions to them - faced by people with epilepsy.

The Government is able to support those with epilepsy and guarantee the essential services like health and education because we have a strong economy.
