Consultation on franchising code

The Albanese Labor Government is committed to a fair playing field in franchising and is taking action to improve conduct and standards in the sector.

The Government is releasing an exposure draft of the new Franchising Code of Conduct for public consultation.

The remade Code will provide greater confidence in the franchising sector.

The exposure draft Code implements the legislative changes outlined in the Albanese Labor Government’s response to the Independent Review of the Franchising Code conducted in 2023.

The changes will improve protections and streamline processes for franchisees and franchisors who are doing the right thing, supporting Australia’s franchisors and franchisees to grow and strengthen their business.

Interested stakeholders are encouraged to provide submissions by 29 October 2024.

The draft legislative package is available on the Treasury website.

Submissions can be emailed to smallbusinessfranchising@treasury.gov.au during the consultation period.

The new Code is expected to commence on 1 April 2025.

Delivering a fair playing field in franchising is just one way the Albanese Labor Government is supporting Australia’s 2.5 million small businesses.

The Government’s Small Business Statement outlines more than $640 million in targeted supports for small businesses to ease pressure, support small businesses to grow, and level the playing field.
