The search for answers to one of Australia's greatest wartime mysteries is set to receive greater public support following an announcement by Minister for Revenue, and Assistant Treasurer, Mal Brough today.
The Government will introduce legislation to allow tax deductions for gifts of $2 or more to The Finding Sydney Foundation for a period of 2 years.
"The Foundation is in charge of the search for the HMAS Sydney II, which collided with the German auxiliary cruiser HSK Kormoran after a battle off the West Australian coast on November 19, 1941," Mr Brough said.
"The loss of the Sydney, and its crew of 645 sailors, remains a mystery to this day. The listing of the Foundation as a deductible gift recipient will assist in attracting public support for the search of the Sydney II, and the establishment of a virtual memorial to the sailors and the engagement."
Subject to the legislation's passage through Parliament, deductions for gifts to the Foundation will apply for a period of 2 years from today.
Legislation to give effect to this announcement will be introduced as soon as practicable. In the meantime, taxpayers should ensure they receive a receipt for their donation.
