Government Announces Excise Tariff Review

The Australian Government is planning to streamline, simplify and clarify the reporting obligations of parties that are subject to excise legislation.

Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer, Mal Brough, today released an industry discussion paper entitled 'Review of the Schedule to the Excise Tariff Act'.

"The review is directed at simplifying and clarifying legislative provisions in order to reduce compliance costs for excise manufacturers and other excise stakeholders, importers and administering authorities," Mal Brough said.

The schedule lists all excisable products (including alcohol other than wine, tobacco and lubricating oils as well as fuel items). The review is prompted in the first place by the need to implement the decision to remove the effective excise on burner fuels. This has provided a timely opportunity to review the entire schedule.

Submissions are invited from parties that were directly impacted by the administration of the legislation.
