AS millions of Australians rush to finish their Christmas shopping and fill the stockings of loved ones they should be cautious about the gifts they buy and receive for children, Minister for Small Business Michael McCormack says.
"Christmas is one of the best times of the year for kids but many of the joyous gifts and toys they receive have hidden dangers which every parent should be aware of," Mr McCormack said.
"Toys, decorations and novelty lights carrying button batteries or magnets can be deadly if swallowed and children under five are at the greatest risk.
"Always check battery compartments are completely sealed and require two movements to open or have other securing features before your child gets to enjoy their present."
Mr McCormack said taking extra care by checking warning labels and following product safety instructions will make the holiday season safer for families to enjoy.
"Many kids will also receive basketball rings and backboards which is another popular Christmas gift among Australian families but incorrect installation of these products could lead to serious injury or death. I have recently reviewed the standard on basketball rings to ensure safety requirements continue," Mr McCormack said.
"Before the family goes out to have a dribble on the household drive-way make sure the basketball ring or backboard is secured properly before you try for a slam dunk!
"Shop smart this year by checking and reading the labels on the products you purchase or are gifted and if in doubt consult the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Product Safety website."
