Appointment of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Australian Statistician

The Morrison Government is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr David Gruen as the Australian Statistician to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for a five-year period commencing from 11 December 2019.

The ABS is Australia's national statistical agency providing key statistics on a wide range of economic, environmental and social issues, to assist and encourage informed decision making, research and discussion within governments and the community.

Dr Gruen is a highly experienced Deputy Secretary, and is currently at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet where he leads the Economic and G20 Sherpa area within the Domestic Policy Group. He has a demonstrated track record of leadership in public policy and outstanding economic and international credentials.

The skills and experience Dr Gruen will bring to the position will ensure the ABS continues to be responsive to community, business and government needs for data, statistics and insights.

The Government wishes to thank the outgoing Australian Statistician Mr David Kalisch for his leadership over the past five years. Mr Kalisch made a significant contribution during his time as the Australian Statistician.
