International Regulators Meet In Hobart

Senator Nick Sherry, Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law, is pleased to announce that representatives of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) are meeting in Hobart today to discuss global regulatory issues.

"The IOSCO meeting, focused on international enforcement issues, illustrates how much Australia values contact with overseas regulators to discuss regulatory issues and developments," Minister Sherry said.

"The global financial crisis is a key example of how regular contact with overseas regulators has helped Australia keep abreast of global developments, for instance, in the temporary bans imposed on short selling."

Issues to be discussed today include trends in securities and futures violations, asset freezing on behalf of overseas regulators, and investor alerts.

Attending the meeting are representatives from Australian Securities and Investments Commission, along with senior officials from the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong; the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission in Japan; the New Zealand Securities Commission; the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority in Germany; the United Kingdom Financial Services Authority and the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The delegates are senior enforcement officers of their respective national regulatory authorities.
