The Assistant Treasurer, Senator Nick Sherry, has today signed a new 10-year licensing agreement between the Commonwealth and the operators of the Perth Mint, Gold Corporation.
"It's a pleasure to be here today in Perth to sign this contract on behalf of the Commonwealth," said the Assistant Treasurer.
Today's agreement allows the Perth Mint to continue to issue legal tender precious metal and base metal commemorative coins in accordance with the Currency Act 1965.
The previous contract has been operational for 20 years and expires this year on 30 June.
"The previous contract has allowed the Perth Mint to produce a range of coins celebrating themes that are of great value to all of Australia," the Assistant Treasurer said.
"The numismatic coins issued by the Perth Mint, range from commemorating Australian history and culture to sporting events to astronomy."
"These coins have been special to many Australians, both collectors and non-collectors, young and old."
"I'm pleased to have signed this new contract to enable the Perth Mint to continue issuing legal tender coins."
The Commonwealth has received annual royalties from the Perth Mint as a percentage of gross sales revenue over the past 20 years and these payments will continue under the new contract.
The Perth Mint produces legal tender bullion coin programs and numismatic and commemorative coins. It is one of two Mints in Australia that is able to issue legal tender coins - the other is the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra.
