Leadership

John Howard informed me last night that he intends to fight the next election. I am glad that the issue has now been settled. It allows us all to plan accordingly.

I have spoken to many members of the public and colleagues and it is clear that most people do not support a leadership transition at the current time.

I am committed to serving in the Parliament for the long haul. I am committed to the long-term interests of the Liberal Party and the nation.

The Government has had significant political achievements but there are enormous political challenges ahead. It is clear to me that the Party wants me to continue to work, as I have in the past, with all of my energy as Deputy Leader and Treasurer.

As Deputy Leader and Treasurer I will work for the re-election of the Coalition Government, for the election of all our candidates and for the re-election of John Howard as Prime Minister.

Working as Treasurer is a tremendous honour and responsibility. We face many economic challenges.

Australia is a one trillion dollar economy. We need disciplined and responsible decisions to build for our future.

I look forward to fighting the next election with total energy and commitment and beyond that to work to address the nation’s great challenges for the next decade and beyond.
