Reappointment of Taxation Commissioner

The Treasurer, Mr Costello announced today that the Governor-General has re-appointed Mr Michael Carmody to the position of Commissioner of Taxation for a period of seven years. Mr Carmody’s current appointment expires on 22 January 2000.

Since his appointment as Commissioner in 1993, Mr Carmody has introduced new levels of openness and accountability for the operations of the Australian Taxation Office, including through his commitment to the Taxpayers’ Charter. His leadership has also seen the Office move to deal more proactively with current and emerging issues as demonstrated by its responses to aggressive tax planning and to the opportunities and challenges posed by developments in e-commerce.

The Australian Taxation Office is currently working closely with the business community and their representatives to implement the Government’s overhaul of the tax system. His re-appointment will ensure continuity of leadership for the Australian Taxation Office during the period of transition to Australia’s new tax system.
