Doorstop Interview, Canberra

SUBJECTS: John Fahey

JOURNALIST:

(Inaudible)…..John Fahey….(inaudible)?

TREASURER:

John Fahey has announced that he will be retiring from the Parliament at the next election. I just want to say that he has made an enormous contribution to Australian public life. John Fahey was the person that headed the bid for the Sydney Olympics, and I don’t think Australians will ever forget the sheer enthusiasm when he jumped and Australia won that bid. I saw his sheer enthusiasm when he spent hours, weeks, months, working to fix Australia’s finances. He will be regarded as Australia’s best Finance Minister. I am sorry that we will lose him to public life, here in Australia. He has been one of my best friends. He has been a real cobber. But I wish him, and Colleen and their family all the best as he makes a new life for himself outside of politics.
