After 125 days Mr Beazley finally says something on superannuation

The Howard Government has outlined the most dynamic reforms to superannuation in our nation’s history - a crucial plan to meet the challenge of an ageing population.

Early last week, following 125 days of super silence, Mr Beazley finally caved in to pressure and said something on superannuation.

Unfortunately, all Australians heard from the man who wants to be considered the alternative Prime Minister was a vague notion of support – a wishy-washy ‘maybe’.

Mr Beazley has not had the policy aptitude to tell Australians whether or not Labor will support:

  • abolishing end benefits tax on superannuation;
  • abolishing reasonable benefits limits;
  • extending the co-contribution scheme to the self employed; and
  • halving the age pension assets test taper rate to $1.50 per fortnight from 20 September 2007.

Australians deserve to know how far Mr Beazley’s formless notion of support really goes.

The bottom line is it took Mr Beazley an astonishing 125 days to develop a vague and flimsy statement on the most important reform to superannuation in Australia’s history.

Imagine Mr Beazley running the country like that.
