Today, the Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer, Peter Dutton, has announced that gifts of $2 or more donated to the World Youth Day 2008 Trust (the Trust) are tax deductible from 5 September for a limited period. As a result, gifts made to the Trust before 1 July 2009 will be tax deductible.
The World Youth Day 2008 is an international event that will be held in Sydney from 15 to 20 July 2008 to coincide with the visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia. The Trust has been established as a way of collecting community contributions in support of World Youth Day 2008.
Taxpayers should ensure they receive a receipt for their donation.
Legislation to give effect to the Government’s decision will be introduced as soon as practicable.
