Appointment of Private Sector Representatives for the Tax Law Rewrite

The Assistant Treasurer, Senator Rod Kemp, announced today the appointment of three additional private sector representatives to assist the rewrite of the income tax law by the Tax Law Improvement Project.

Senator Kemp said he was delighted with the high calibre of the responses that he received to his invitation for expressions of interest in the positions.

The new appointments will strengthen the commercial experience of the project and enhance its capacity to deliver more easily understood tax law.

  • Mr John Morgan is a tax partner with the legal firm of Blake Dawson Waldron in Melbourne. He is a member of the Tax Committees of the Law Council of Australia and the Law Institute of Victoria. Mr Morgan has a strong personal interest in plain English Law.
  • Professor Robert Deutsch is Professor of Taxation at the University of New South Wales. He was previously a partner specialising in tax at the law firm of Mallesons Stephen Jaques and continues to represent clients in tax litigation.

Professor Deutsch is the author of many taxation text books and, as a former Chairman of the Australian branch of the International Fiscal Association, brings particular skills in international tax practice.
  • Mr Tom Magney is a well known figure in the tax profession and his outstanding career has been recognised by life membership of the Taxation Institute of Australia. He is currently a consultant to Allen, Allen and Hemsley where he was previously a senior tax partner. He is also a member of the Public Tax Rulings Panel that advises the Commissioner of Taxation and is the Australian representative to the International Tax Group.

Senator Kemp noted that these appointments, together with the continued valuable contribution of Mr Simon Gaylard, a tax partner with Coopers and Lybrand, will ensure the successful completion of this important project to which the Government has a strong commitment.
