Extension Of Deductibility Of Gifts To The Australian Ex-Prisoners Of War Memorial Fund

The Assistant Treasurer, Senator Rod Kemp, announced that gifts to the value of $2 or more made to the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial Fund will continue to be deductible from 20 October 2001 to 19 October 2003.

Gifts to the Fund were previously deductible from 20 October 1999 to 19 October 2001.

The Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial Fund has been established to raise funds for the construction of a Memorial which will be a fitting tribute to the sacrifice and service of some 35,000 Australian prisoners of war since Federation. The Memorial will also serve as a place of remembrance for the families and friends of the almost 8,300 Australians who died in captivity.

Tax deductible gift status will assist the Fund to attract public support for its activities.

This decision was taken prior to the announcement of the election and the caretaker period. Legislation to give effect to the Government's decision will be introduced as soon as practicable and taxpayers should ensure that they receive a receipt for their donation.
