Scouts, GST - Doorstop Interview

Note

Thursday 25 February 1999
3.40 pm

SUBJECTS: Scouts, GST

ASSISTANT TREASURER:

Thank you all for coming. Let me make it absolutely clear there will be no GST payable on odd jobs done in odd jobs week. We have seen a bit of a scare campaign today, belted up by the Labor Party . The Labor Party are trying to get some cover for preventing the Government trying to deliver its election promise of $13 billion worth of tax cuts for the Australian people and what we are seeing with the Labor Party is going off on every tangent, every day there will be a major scare campaign from the Labor Party. The trouble is that the Labor Party are not getting the evidence they want before the Senate Committee and as I have said to you all last week that Round One was won by the Government in terms of the evidence given to that Committee and as I have said we are seeing, I believe, a scare campaign.

JOURNALIST:

So Scouts won’t be required to collect tax in any respect at all once the GST is introduced?

ASSISTANT TREASURER:

Let me make it absolutely clear, we are talking about odd jobs here, we are talking about the odd jobs performed by scouts, these are non-commercial activities and people who have a scout knocking on their door once or twice a year asking for an odd job, a bob a job, that type of activity is not subject to GST.

JOURNALIST:

Question: [inaudible] scare campaign …

ASSISTANT TREASURER:

You will have to repeat that question.

JOURNALIST:

What do you think would have sparked the attack?

ASSISTANT TREASURER:

Well I am not sure what would have sparked them to say it but let me say that my major concern is, of course, with the activities of our political opponents, the Labor Party, who cannot stomach the fact that they lost an election on tax reform and so what the Labor Party attempt to do is not attempt to enlighten people what the Labor Party attempts to do is to scare people and an attempt as a cover because they are trying to block some $13 billion worth of tax cuts which this Government is determined to deliver to the Australian people.

Thank you.
