Takeovers Panel Re-Appointments

The Hon Ross Cameron MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, today announced the re appointment of thirteen part time members of the Takeovers Panel.

Re appointed to the Takeovers Panel until 7 March 2007 are Justice Robert Austin, Ms Carol Buys, Ms Kathleen Farrell, Mr David Gonski AO, Ms Teresa Handicott, Mr Braddon Jolley, Ms Alison Lansley, Ms Irene Lee, Mr Kevin McCann, Ms Marie McDonald, Ms Robyn Pak Poy, Mr Chris Photakis and Justice Kim Santow OAM .

"I would like to thank these members for their outstanding contributions to the work of the Takeovers Panel and express my appreciation for their continued commitment to the Panel. Their willingness to contribute to the effective resolution of takeovers disputes in Australia is to be applauded", Mr Cameron said.

"The re-appointment process, and the intention of several Panel members to stand aside at the end of their terms, will allow the Government to make further appointments to bring new expertise into the Panel, without enlarging it beyond its present size", Mr Cameron said.

A key issue is to provide members with the opportunity to sit on a sufficient number of proceedings to maintain their familiarity with takeovers provisions and Panel processes.

"Consequently, a number of people who have made valuable contributions to the work of the Panel have not been re appointed at this time."

"I would also like to take this opportunity to convey the Government's appreciation for their contributions to the success of the Panel in resolving takeovers disputes in a timely and efficient manner", Mr Cameron said.

Editor's note: The Takeovers Panel is the primary forum for resolving disputes about a takeover bid until the bid period has ended. The Panel is a peer review body, with part time members appointed from the active members of Australia's takeovers and business communities.

The Panel has a full time Executive based in Melbourne to assist members of the Panel and the takeovers community, to draft policy, and provide continuity to the Panel in its decisions.
