Avoid a broken heart this Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is a golden opportunity for scammers to prey on the vulnerable.

That’s why the Albanese government is urging Australians to take extra care with their online interactions today.

The ACCC estimates Australians lost $40 million lost to romance scams last year, up almost ten per cent from the year before.

There are some simple steps Australians can take to avoid these heartbreaking frauds.

Never share personal data with or give money to someone you meet online.

Always be suspicious when a match on a dating app wants to move the conversation to another app, or won’t video message or meet in person.

The government is prioritising action to combat scammers, including:

  • establishing a National Anti-Scams Centre to rapidly respond to emerging scams, including romance scams;
  • bringing in tough new industry codes;
  • increasing funding for identity recovery services;
  • appointing a dedicated minister to combat scams.

Beating scammers is everyone’s business, government, industry and individuals.

Having a conversation with family and friends this Valentine's about being safe online can help.
